Ms. Davis' and Ms. Schatzley's classes earned good behavior rewards in Ms. Simmons' art class this week!! Ms. Simmons uses a point system with each class. Points can be given for entering the room quietly, being respectful, listening/following directions, giving best effort, and working well as a team. When a class reaches 10 points they earn a "good behavior day." The reward is given during the students' regular art activity time and students have fun building 3-D creations with Kinetic Sand, Mangnaforms, and Constructing with Straws and Connectors. Congrats to these students for showing how it's done!!! See Facebook for more pics

The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities for kids. Educators believe every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path. The Hour of Code takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week in December. A big thank you to Patti Kitts for coming to Westside to facilitate our Hour of Code with our kiddos! More pics are on Facebook!!

In library, students are reading the biography of Sarah Hale. Sarah was a teacher and a writer (Mary Had a Little Lamb). She was the first female magazine editor in America. Her husband, a young lawyer named David, died when Sarah was pregnant with their 5th child. Sarah was an activist and when Americans began to forget about Thanksgiving, she wrote four presidents about making it a national holiday. They said no. But in the middle of the Civil War, Sarah wrote Abraham Lincoln. She pleaded that while Thanksgiving would not stop the war, it would be something to bring America together celebrating on the same day while the country was falling apart. Lincoln agreed and in 1863, he made Thanksgiving a national holiday. For that we say, THANK YOU SARAH!!

In art class, with Ms. Cheryl Simmons, Westside students are learning about the color wheel and observed a STEAM activity called The Walking Water Color Wheel. The water color wheel is complete when the 3 cups with primary colors have their colors travel up and through the paper towels known as “capillary action” (similar to the way plants draw water into their roots from the soil). The primary colors then drip into the corresponding cups creating the missing secondary colors. Such a fun way to learn!!

PARENTS: Accidents and spills happen at school (more often than you think!). Getting clothes dirty or torn at recess has been known to happen on occasion as well. We are asking ALL parents to please send a change of clothes with your students to be kept at school. Our nurse's clothes cabinet is not large enough to house all sizes for all seasons... and most kiddos would prefer to change into their own clothing. Since it is almost fall weather, we ask that you send a shirt, pants, underwear, and clean socks. We appreciate your help....and we know your child will truly appreciate having them here if they are ever needed. Thank you!!

Parents want their children to do well in school but many don’t fully understand the connection between chronic absences and a student’s academic achievement. To combat this issue, Attendance Works declared September Attendance Awareness Month. Mayor Osbourne, with representatives from each school in attendance, signed a proclamation today that states Searcy will participate in Attendance Awareness this month to encourage school attendance, reduce the number of absences, and strengthen our communities' graduation rate. Westside's own Ms. Gardner and her daughter attended the signing.

Our school library encourages self-directed learning. Students get to choose two books each week that THEY feel are JUST RIGHT for them. Ideally, a fondness for books starts at home, but reading can become a habit through increased opportunities to read self-chosen books at school. So encourage your student to show you what they chose, tell you why they chose that particular book, and whether it challenges them without being "too hard" to read. Also, encourage them to return their books each library day so they can choose two new books!!☺️ #RISEArkansas
