Web Construction

Constructing a Web

Third graders at McRae recently engaged in a Picture-Perfect STEM unit titled, Spider Science. In this lesson they explored the secret life of spiders, focusing on how they spin silk, build webs, and capture their prey. The pictures show students undertaking a design challenge in a lab setting where they discovered how intricately engineered spiderwebs truly are. After working with a small group to construct one of four spiderwebs (funnel web, orb web, cobweb or sheet web), each group reported on their design and experience. Following the lab, students continued learning in their classrooms how genetic information is passed from parent to offspring, how inherited and acquired traits differ, and how scientists design experiments to study animal behavior in space.
