Dyslexia Month

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month!!

\r\n

Dyslexia is a type of learning disability that impairs a person’s ability to read despite normal intelligence.  Dyslexia is one of the most  common learning disabilities. As  many as 15-20% of the  population will exhibit symptoms of dyslexia, but with awareness and early effective intervention, most can learn to read!  All students (especially those with characteristics of dyslexia!) benefit from explicit and systematic reading instruction based on the Science of Reading.

The state of Arkansas produces many helpful Science of Reading Resources that can be found on the R.I.S.E. Arkansas website.  R.I.S.E. stands for Reading Initiative for Student Excellence and it is a statewide initiative that is committed to transforming literacy education.  One of the resources provided includes a monthly informational newsletter devoted to supporting teachers, parents and students in understanding and implementing Science of Reading instruction.  Check out the October 2021 and October 2022 newsletters to learn more about the Science of Reading and Dyslexia!

In addition to the RISE Arkansas Newsletters, we want to introduce you to a great video resource called Brain Builders! Brain Builders is an animated video series developed for students to help them understand what the brain does in order to read.  We invite you to join Minh on his journey as his babysitter, Tamara, helps him cultivate a love for reading and understanding the Science of Reading.
